Gertrude Curry, age 94, passed away August 17, 2020 at Salem Springlake Health and Rehabilitation Center where she resided for the past 3 years. She was cared for with love and respect by a special group of Heros.
Gertrude was born September 14, 1925 in Wapanucka, Oklahoma to parents Richard and Lillie Melissa Welchel. She loved being a former “Okie.”
She loved flowers and had beautiful gardens. At Springlake her real joy was to help plant and prune the garden.
She loved her Lord and served Him faithfully at Hampton Methodist Church for many years. A dinner there was not complete without her pecan pies.
She also loved being a “Mom” and “Granny”. In fact being a “Granny” was her greatest joy.
She was preceded in death by her beloved “Johnny” Lal Curry, her son, John Wayne Curry, 2 sisters Imogene Christenson and Maybelle Grutza, and a little brother William.
She is survived by one brother Roy (Patsy) Welchel, a World War II Vet,her first “Hero”.
She is also survived by daughter Pat (Rell) Peck, her 3 grandchildren Chris (Julie & Phillip) Curry, Lissa (Brad) Byers and Drew Hastings.
Gertrude’s great grandchildren include twins Tyler and Taylor Hastings, Harmony, Melody, and Joy Byers and great-great grandson, Julian Diaz and special grandson Tim Peck.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews in Michigan, Oklahoma and Colorado. Carrol (Dick) Nagers of Maryland and Andy (Dianah) Groves continued to play a part in her long life and were much loved.
Funeral services will be Thursday, August 20, 2020, at 1 PM, in the chapel of Boyd Funeral Directors and Cremation Services. Burial will follow in Hampton Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour on Thursday, August 20, 2020 in the chapel of Boyd Funeral Directors and Cremation Services in Salem, KY.
